Thursday, November 9, 2000

The vocal music department is off to a great start with a great group of students.

David Gregg has attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as a member of the 2000 All-State Chorus. The 2000 Festival will celebrate the 54th anniversary of this prestigious event.

District Auditions for the 277 piece All-State Band, 190 piece All-State Orchestra and 600 voice All-State Chorus were held Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Storm Lake, Mapton, Oelwein, Atlantic, Indianola and Washington.

Participants will rehearse in Ames on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, and the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State University, Ames, on Saturday evening, Nov. 18, 2000. This program is under the auspices of the Iowa High school Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association.

The junior high choir has been learning a variety of music they will be using throughout the year. There are 48 students in junior high choir and all have a great amount of enthusiasm. The choir is working toward their first performance, which will be the Holiday Concert Dec. 20 at the high school.

Several of the students also spent the first couple of weeks preparing to audition for the Iowa Choral Director's Opus Choir. These members included Adam Pedersen, Derek Lietz, Jeffrey Demers, John Weiland, Jocelyn Otto, Jill Schroeder, Kayla Schmitz, Liza Lichtenberg, EMily Cameron, Amanda Balo, Elissa Stevens and Kayla Suhr. Derek Kietz was selected for participation in the fifteenth annual Opus Honor Choir Festival. The 2000 Opus Honor Choir will perform at 4:00 p.m. Nov. 16 in the C.Y. Stephens Auditorium in the Iowa State Center in Ames.
