Wells' Dairy begins filling towering storage

Tuesday, December 2, 2003

Wells' Dairy is filling what it believes to be the world's largest freezer.

The company, which makes Blue Bunny ice cream, started filling a cold storage warehouse this fall.

Representatives of the Milwaukee-based firm that built the freezer, officially known as an Automated Storage Retrieval System (ASRS), estimate it's the biggest of its kind in the world.

At 10.2 million cubic feet, the 12-story freezer holds as much storage space as one million typical household freezers.

Wells' Dairy, founded in Le Mars 90 years ago, produces more than 500 Blue Bunny-branded products, including ice cream, novelties, yogurt and milk.

Le Mars claims to be the ice cream capitol of the world. It's home to two Wells' Dairy plants, which produce 100 million gallons of ice cream a year.
