Funeral services for George Phipps, 73, of Cherokee, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee with Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m. at the church.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Boothby Funeral Home of Cherokee is in charge of the arrangements.
George A., the son of Arthur and Flora (Ashenfelter) Phipps, was born July 22, 1927 at the Afton family farm. He attended Afton country school, graduating from Wilson High School in 1945.
On Sept. 19, 1948, he was united in marriage to Joyce Woltman in Cherokee. He worked as a truck driver, an electrician assistant, as well as farming for 44 years on the farm that has been in the Phipps family since 1881.
Mr. Phipps was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he served as usher, a board of trustees member and was presently serving on the renovation committee. He was also a Cherokee County Farm Bureau member where he served as Farm Bureau president, an Afton Township 4-H leader, and served as school board president of the Wilson Independent District.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Lorne Phipps and his wife Betty; one sister Martha Patterson and her husband Ralph.
Mr. Phipps is survived by his wife Joyce; three sons: Neil and his wife Jodi Phipps of Cedar Falls; Dana and Susan Phipps of Cherokee; Brad and his wife Diane Phipps of Cherokee; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and other friends.
