The City of Storm Lake will try a new liquid solution this winter to help combat icy and snowy roads. The system is similar to one used by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Street superintendent Pat Kelly said the city street department will test the salt-brine system to see how it works for Storm Lake's streets.
Kelly said the street department will not preapply the solution in advance of winter storms, but will apply it afterwards to see if the salt-brine solution activates the salt faster and keep the material on the streets.
When planning for the snow season, Kelly said the city does go by weather projections and forecasts, but also by the old adage, "Plan for the worst and hope for the best."
City crews have been inspecting equipment and scheduling driver routes in the past few weeks. They have also been going over recent street construction, which requires some adjustments to snow removal.
Kelly said residents are urged to keep cars parked on driveways as far from the street as possible, and to follow the snow parking ordinance.
