Council gives raise to city administrator, launches bid for a hefty housing grant

Thursday, November 6, 2003

The Storm Lake City Council met in closed session Monday night to evaluate City Administrator John Call, and later offered him a 4 percent pay increase. Call's present salary is $76,211.

In other business:

* The council approved the authorization to apply for a $1,000 grant from Mid American Energy Co. for trees to be planted at the dredge containment site.

* The council voted to submit a grant application to the Iowa Department of Economic Development for a housing rehabilitation grant. This grant if funded would provide money to rehabilitate 12 homes in pre-determined section of the community.

Following approval of the grant the city would seek applications from residents in the selected area who meet the low to moderate income requirements of the grant.

The grant would provide $364,000 toward rehabilitation for owner-occupied homes only. With the resolution, the city would be committing $18,000 of matching city funds from money set aside for housing programs in prior years' budgets. Each house accepted would be eligible for up to $24,900 worth of repairs.

* The council awarded the bid for the city's 2003 Well and Water Main Project to Layne-Western of Grimes for a base bid price of $578,751.
