BVU Homecoming Parade Set

The Buena Vista University Homecoming Parade is being planned for Friday, October 17, at 4:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to watch the fun as the parade passes through downtown Storm Lake.

Holiday Open House planned for SL

The annual Holiday Open House by Storm Lake retailers is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 2 and will kick off the holiday season for Storm Lake businesses. Hours are from 12-5 p.m. The latest holiday merchandise will be on display, and refreshments served.

Stepperettes host style show & tea

There will be a Style Show and Tea held at Albert City in the Albert-City Truesdale new gym on Sunday, October 26 , at 2 p.m., put on by the Albert-City Truesdale Stepperette drill team.

The present Stepperettes will be modeling all the past state competition uniforms. The public is all welcome to spend that Sunday afternoon down memory lane with the present and past AC-T Stepperettes and music from each era.

Symphony 'pops' in Cherokee

Maestro Lee Thorson, Storm Lake, and the musicians of the Cherokee Symphony will be opening their 48th concert season. The season will begin Sunday, October 26, at the Cherokee Community Center at 4 p.m. with the annual "Pops Concert."

The concert will feature music from a number of famous television shows as well as some "spooky stuff' just in time for Halloween. In addition, the symphony will play Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" (which was used in the Disney movie "Fantasia") and will also feature a Robert Wendel medley entitled "When TV Was Young." Admission at the door is $7. High school age children or younger are admitted free.

Civil War drama

A two-person musical theatre piece, "In Thinking of America" comes to the Lauridsen Theatre in theLakes Art Center, North of Okoboji on Highway 71. The show is October 12, 7:30 p.m. It combines the song, text of letters, speeches and social commentary from the American Civil War featuring Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, and other formidable Americans. Great songs as Dixie Land, Steal Away, and Battle Hymn of the

Republic are featured. Since its enthusiastic debut at the Gettysburg Heritage Days Festival, this "Jewel of America" has been performed in over 110 cities throughout the United States. A Cafe Creole is available.

SL Readers Club

Everyone is welcome to the Readers Club at the Storm Lake Public Library! October's selection, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd, will be discussed Thursday, October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Library. Other scheduled discussions include "Welcome to the World Baby Girl" by Fannie Flagg (November 25) and "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham (December 30). Books and discussion guides are available at the library.
