After refusing to pay a charge of $1,500 to the insurance provider for the Linn Grove Dam, the Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors learned this week that the $1,500 is not an additional charge to the county's policy.
Last week the board refused to pay a the charge to the insurance provider for the dam, Hartford. The county believed the charge to be a new one, however, after meeting with a representative of Hartford, the county learned the $1,500 charge is the premium the county has always paid.
The misunderstanding resulted when repairs on the Linn Grove Dam could not begin until after Sept. 1, which was the deadline Hartford had set to finish repairs. Insurance coverage was discontinued during that time by Hartford.
Once repairs were complete, the county went back to Hartford for insurance. With the timing of the action, county auditor Karen Strawn said that the $1,500 appeared to be an additional charge, though it was the fee to cover the dam in the first place.
Hartford did agree to prorate the cost for the remainder of this year to $1,250 because the company did not provide coverage two months while repairs were being completed
