Lakefront clean-up striking a nerve

Thursday, November 2, 2000

Over 700 cards have been mailed to Storm Lake clubs, organizations, schools, churches, businesses and individuals urging them to take part in the Lake Clean-up set for Saturday, Nov. 11.

"We have a pretty good response so far, but we need a lot more people to volunteer," said Melanie Miller, Director of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce, which is heading up the project.

Several groups have already agreed to take part cleaning up specific areas of beach or lakefront. About five pickup trucks have also been offered so far to haul away the refuse collected.

"We are pleased with how people are talking about the project. The first thing we hear from them is, 'Okay, that's a really good idea.' We hope that when the work day comes, people will put their feet where their mouths are," Miller said.

Groups and individuals can call the chamber at 732-3780 to volunteer. They may choose a specific area of public shoreline to work on, or can ask for an assignment. Private property owners along the shore are also urged to take part in clean up efforts that day.
