Alta Kiwanis member Ginni Cook asked that the Alta Kiwanis donate a minimum of $400 that was not used for camp scholarships this summer to the Alta Action Team this week.
Cook said the action team is receiving an Americorps member to be based in Alta full time to serve as a hub and coordinator for the efforts going on to serve the needs of children in the Alta community.
"Alta has been asked to contribute $1,500 to the annual living allowance of the member, along with support for the current children's programs and plans for the future," Cook said. "The total goal is $5,000."
The school will use $1,000 of its Success 4 funds this year. Kiwanis is asked to lead the joint effort with other groups to benefit all of the children and families of the Alta community.
"There are loads of things the action team is working on," Cook said. "There are 35 kids that have been identified as needing additional help and I see this as a way for us to help."
The Kiwanis agreed with Cook and donated the $400 to the action team as one of their many service opportunities.
In other community service, the Alta Kiwanis gathered with youth helpers last week to clean out the ditches they have adopted east of Alta.
The volunteers started by the Alta Raceway and walked two miles on both sides of the ditches, cleaning them up. With over 20 volunteers, the ditches were cleaned up in 35 minutes.
The Kiwanis will be volunteering their time at the Music Smorgasbord this Saturday, Nov. 4 from 5-8 p.m. This will be the 42nd opportunity for members of the community to enjoy this wonderful feast.
Also, the Kiwanis will send skilled workers to help work on the Habitat for Humanity's home in Storm Lake. Work is being done on the home on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
Kiwanis member Dick Anderson discussed the possibility of helping clean the shores of Storm Lake on Nov. 11. Anderson said he'll get at least four other volunteers and make it an Inter-Club service with the Storm Lake Hynoon organization.
The Kiwanis are currently signing up to work at a pancake breakfast that will be held on Dec. 2.
