Grandfather's tree inspires Alta teen essay writer vendseu is overall county contest winner

Thursday, November 2, 2000

Alta eighth grader Wyatt Svendseu entered an essay contest sponsored by the Buena Vista County Soil and Water Conservation District and received the contest's highest honor.

Svendseu received a first place award among the eighth grade participants and also received the overall county award for his essay.

Every seventh and eighth grader in Buena Vista County was given the chance to write a 500-800 word essay on "How I can make a difference in soil and water conservation." There were three winners in each class and two overall winners.

There were 161 essays turned into the Soil and Water Conservation office. The essays were then given to a Language Arts class at Buena Vista University to be judged.

Along with Svendseu, Alta eighth graders Amanda Balo and Jenny Mahr were awarded. Balo earned second place and Mahr earned third.

Read the winning essays in the 11/02 Pilot Tribune.
