G-H, L-M advance to regional semifinals

HOLSTEIN - Darci Vohs charted 14 kills and Kris Beyer added nine to help power Galva-Holstein to a 15-1, 15-4, 15-8 victory over IKM (Manilla) in a Class 1A regional quarterfinal match on Wednesday night at Holstein.

Galva-Holstein, now 33-2-2 overall and ranked ninth in the state, will play unranked Southern Calhoun (15-16-2) in a regional semifinal match Monday night at Holstein.

Galva-Holstein charted 47 kills in the match. Taneal Jepsen had eight, Stacy Friedrichsen seven and Shelley Cronin six.

Cronin tallied four ace serves, while Jepsen added two. Friedrichsen recorded 36 set assists. Defensively, Cronin came up with 21 digs, Jepsen 16, Beyer 10 and Vohs nine. Vohs also had three blocks.

The Pirates were 71-for-79 in serving with 12 aces.

"We played well," said Galva-Holstein coach Scott Mitchell. "We kind of took them out of the game with our serving. We played very good defense. I thought we played with a lot of intensity and didn't have many breakdowns."

North Kossuth 15-15-15

Alta 9-1-6

Fifth-ranked North Kossuth eliminated Alta from the Class 1A regional tournament with a victory Wednesday night.

North Kossuth, now 36-2-1, will play Laurens-Marathon (25-6-1) in a regional semifinal match Monday at Laurens.

Nicole Kjolhede and Greta Lichtenberg each had three kills for the Cyclones. Nikki Slefert and Laurie Grieme had two apiece.

Shandra Walker went 9-for-9 in serving, while Danielle Allen was 11-for-12. Jamie Snyder went 5-for-5, Kjolhede 4-for-4 and Megan Brechwald 3-for-3.

Grieme had five blocks and Allen four. Brechwald charted four digs and Walker three. Allen tallied eight set assists for the Cyclones, 13-8-1 overall.

"We played extremely well," Alta coach Jeannie Henningsen said. "We jumped out to a 7-1 lead and made them call timeouts. We will miss our seven seniors. These girls were our leaders this year. I can't say enough about them as both players and individuals."
