Lake Preservation teams up with BVU students

Tuesday, October 31, 2000

A group of six Buena Vista University students have teamed up with the Lake Preservation Association (LPA) in a community education campaign entitled "Deepening the Ties."

For the past several weeks, the student group Lake Partners has been working directly with organizations, local leaders and LPA president Steve Roth. Their goal was to create an awareness campaign that would inform the Storm Lake community about the current situation of the lake, the dredging project scheduled to take place in the summer of 2001 and future projects needed for upkeep of the lake.

Currently, 180 acres on the west end of the lake will be dredged this summer. However, greater awareness is warranted in order to achieve the LPA's goal to increase dredging.

"The lake is 14,000 years old and needs a lot of TLC to ensure its role as a place of tourism, recreation and wildlife refuge," Roth said. "The people of Iowa have a right to be informed about their lake and these students have created a strong and much needed campaign."

Lake Partners will launch the public relations campaign within the next two weeks.
