Tens of thousands of fish die after toxic spill at Pocahontas

Tuesday, September 2, 2003

The Iowa DNR is blaming the Pocahontas City Wastewater plant for a spill into Lizard Creek southeast of the city. The count of destroyed sunfish, northern pike, bullheads, minnows, chubs and stonerollers was expected to reach into the tens of thousands by early this week, with eight miles of creek showing very high levels of deadly ammonia.

Preliminary investigation by the DNR indicated that the plant was having maintenance work done, and effluent released into the environment had not been fully treated.
