SL approves plans for water improvement projects

Thursday, March 5, 2009

The City of Storm Lake gave an okay Monday night for a contract with Veenstra and Kimm to provide a design and inspection services for construction of a $712,000 water line to run on the southeast side of the city.

Infrastructure Superintendent Pat Kelly says the line will be beneficial as it will help provide stablility in water tower levels and will "loop" the current distribution system. The placement of the new main would be located from the existing water distribution system on the Lakeside blacktop running just south of the Lakeside City limits and then will head to the west to connect to the east end of an existing water main near the Bel Air boat ramp.

*The City also approved an agreement with V&K for the installation of a new well on County Road C63, north of West Lake Estates to replace an abandoned well. City Administrator Patti Moore says a test well was drilled with positive results. When complete the well will produce 600 gallons of water a minute. Moore says although the shallower well produces less water than a deeper wel,l it will produce better quality water and will be easier to treat. Estimated cost is $200,000.

*The City also set a public hearing on March 16 at 5 p.m. for the plans for a $177K project to paint both the interior and exterior of the 500,000 gallon water tower located at West Lake Estates. Infrastructure Superintendent Pat Kelly says plans include power washing and recoating the exterior of the tower with an acrylic polymer coating system. The project will also include a blast and recoat of wet interior surfaces as well. A bid letting will be held March 31 at 2 p.m.
