Newell drops community center drive, returns money (01/29/08)
The Newell Community Center Committee has decided to discontinue their fund drive to raise money to build a community center. Committee members told the Pilot-Tribune that they were able to raise only about $37,000, far short of a $150,000 goal. Go ahead and call it gimmicky, but "Cloverfield" is effective. The trailer, with its image of the Statue of Liberty's severed head bouncing down a Manhattan street, created huge buzz online and at Comic-Con. The title gave away nothing - it's just the name of a street near producer J.J. Abrams' Los Angeles office...

Heath Ledger was one of my favorite actors, probably because he wasn't an actor at all. For that reason, he came off as a real person, and in his brief 28 years, he played diverse comedy and drama roles in some quite memorable pictures. Like most people, I was a little shocked to hear of his sudden death. (Not greatly shocked, because Hollywood success does seem to take a toll, but this was a guy who certainly seemed to have it all going for him.)...
