County cuts officials' raise proposals in half, to 4% (01/10/08)
The Buena Vista County elected officials will all receive a 4 percent wage increase in the upcoming fiscal year - half of what the BV County Compensation Board recommended to the Board of Supervisors, it was decided on Tuesday. Supervisor Paul Merten opened the discussion...
JV basketball team chalks up wins (01/10/08)
Cyclone JV team claims 49-31 win over Panthers The Alta Cyclone JV boys basketball team took on Storm Lake St. Mary's in their final game before Christmas break and defeated the Panthers by a final score of 49-31.  Cameron Manteufel saw his first game action of the season and led Alta's scoring attack with 12 points followed by Jon Lietz with 9, Robert Maharry and Jeremy Lambert with 8 each, Josiah DeRoos with 6, Ryan Friedrich 4 and Chris Bengston 2.  The Clones were led in rebounding by Maharry with 7, DeRoos 6, Lambert 4, Friedrich 3, Jared Buckendahl, Lietz and Bengston all with 2.  Bengston topped in assists with 3.  "We played a solid game by not committing alot of turnovers and getting some transition baskets."  said Coach Lietz , "It's nice to get a win going into break.". ...

The spirit of caring and sharing has brought success to the local food drive.  City of Alta and Alta Municipal Utility employees presented a check to Sue Geyer, representing the the Lord's Cupboard, in the amount of $1,360. Donations of cash and food resulted in the Christmas Season drive to exceed the 2,000-pound goal in 13 days.  A total of 2,689 pounds and dollars were collected.  The City of Alta and Alta Municipal Utilities would like to thank everyone for their generosity. Remember that the Lord's Cupboard is in need of donations throughout the year, as hunger has no season.. ...

When Alice and Lloyd Endreson got married - Jan. 19, 1936 - the temperature outside was well below zero. They have joked throughout their 72-year marriage that their wedding vows never thawed - thus keeping them together. The couple initially met in elementary school at Fairview. Lloyd moved away but both ended up at Highview High School where they met again - looking much different than when they had last seen each other...

A Newell man's photo taken in December is not a mountain lion, according to officials of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, where wildlife experts routinely call into question resports from Iowans claiming to have seen the big cats. Satisfying my flip-flop fever (01/10/08)
I have a problem I face every year at this time. Typically it comes earlier, but with each passing year and the later snowfalls, my issue is put off until it's completely necessary to address. My problem: I thoroughly dislike shoes. I don't hate them, but here is the deal. Summer seems to go so fast because of the long winters that I don't have enough time in flip-flops. Ridiculous I know, but it is something I am trying to overcome...
