SL public sounds off on police (02/19/07)
Everybody's a critic. At least potentially so. For a number of years, Storm Lake police officers have tested their own performance, in part, by asking for input from a fairly random selection of the people they encounter on calls. People they help, people they pull over. People they even have arrested...

The plan to construct a new neighborhood of upscale condominiums on the Storm Lake golf course has been delayed from last fall by concern over subsoil conditions, but should be ready to move quickly early this spring. "Obviously it has fallen behind schedule from what we had originally planned for, but the developers tell me they are close - they want to be in the ground by the end of March," said Steve Brashears of Storm Lake, who is representing the development locally for Regency Commercial Services of Des Moines, a leading builder of upscale residential developments in Iowa.. ...

Worthan finds 'Fair Share' unfair (02/19/07)
The "Right to Work" is on the line. The debate will not occur this week but the foundations are being laid for an all out assault on a 60-year Iowa tradition. Iowans have never been forced to join a union or to pay fees to a union in order to hold a job. That will change if the majority has their way and pushes "Fair Share" through the Iowa House...

The way 13th-ranked Storm Lake St. Mary's has played defense most of the season and especially in the post-season, the Panthers are going to be trouble for any opponents they face the rest of this season. Readers Respond (02/19/07)
Smoke 'em while you've got 'em To the Editor, Iowa is posed to solve all of it's budget problems, with a single stroke of the new government pen. By raising the state tax on cigarettes, the Big Lug intends to balance the budget. It is a regressive tax that affects primarily the poor. Perhaps this new source of revenue will work as effectively as the TouchPlay dollars, or even the casino dollars, that were supposed to be for education? I wonder...
Schroeder's View (02/19/07)
With this year marking my 30th High School Class Reunion, I took a look back...WAY back... at a few interesting facts. In 1977 the U.S. population was 220,239,425 as compared to 298,444,215 in July of 2006, a mere 78,204,790 rise is all. The life expectancy has grown from 73.3 years old in my teenage days is '77 to 77.8 in 2006...
Letter from the Editor (02/19/07)
On a couple of occasions, I've run into the local police mobile command unit (I'm not much of a crime reporter, so it tends to be at events no more edgy than the Christmas parade or a tornado drill).
