New drug threat making its way into Iowa areas (07/17/06)
Khat has been making headlines across the Midwest with two cases in the Des Moines area recently. One Storm Lake area man, an immigrant, said the drug was common when he was growing up in Africa, and he admits to having used it. For most local residents, however, the name remains an unknown. While it is spreading into Iowa, no arrests for use of khat have yet been recorded locally...
Local driver places 4th in statewide contest (07/17/06)
Duane Anderson, a RIDES driver from Storm Lake, recently competed in the Iowa Public Transit Association Roadeo in Mason City. Anderson drives the the a.m. taxi route for RIDES in the city and is a favorite among co-workers and riders. "Duane is loved by everybody and everyone just seems to have nothing but praise. Iowa casinos claim record $1b-plus (07/17/06)
Gamblers are betting even more at the state's riverboat and racetrack casinos, spending a record $1.15 billion over the past 12 months, according to state records. That's up 4.8 percent from the same period a year earlier. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says that between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006, more than 20 million guests visited the casinos, losing an average of $57 each. The figures do not include Indian casinos, which aren't state-regulated...
