Data compiled from the "long form" samples of the 2000 Census have revealed new information about the ethnic and social makeup of Buena Vista County, and perhaps some new introspection in equity. Buena Vista County, for example, is one of only five in the state to see an increase of 25 percent or more among children living in households under the poverty rate since 1989, according to ISU researcher Willis Goudy. A friend of mine and her family were recently involved in a car accident that took the life of her young and vital husband and left one of her daughters with a broken leg and the other one in an intensive care unit with severe head injures. The accident left my friend widowed at the age of 32 and the two girls fatherless at ages 8 and 9.
