Dredging to expand (08/15/02)
As additional money flows into the state dredging project on Storm Lake, one DNR construction engineer says it has been difficult to find the silt they want to remove. "Although there's silt in the lake, a lot of it is only a foot deep, then you run into sand and gravel and you don't want to take sand and gravel out of the lake," said Dick Wilson, Iowa Department of Natural Resources facilities engineer for construction services...

Funding cuts force ICCC to cut hours for ESL classes (08/15/02)
Funding cuts have forced Iowa Central Community College in Storm Lake to reluctantly cut back on the hours for English as a Second Language and GED high school equivalency classes. While no classes are being eliminated, the adults going to class to learn functional English, most of them Latinos, will see offerings cut down from 25 hours a week to 18. GED classes, which help adults go back and earn a high school level diploma, will shrink from 22 hours down to 18...
