Storm Lake school officials are growing disappointed as the legislative session drags on without a promised teacher pay package, or even a nonpartisan agreement on how to pursue it. "The latest e-mail I received this morning said that it is not gone yet, it's not totally dead, but they are talking about some reduction in the $40 million that was to be used to improve base teacher pay and mentorship programs," Storm Lake Superintendent of Schools Bill Kruse said Wednesday...

St. Mary's Physics Olympics team takes second place in state (04/12/01)
The students had a choice of projects including bicycle-powered water heaters, catapult cars, toothpick bridges, mousetrap cars or soda straw arms. The Frederick/Sheller team designed and created a soda straw arm to hold weights. The two said it took about two weeks to design the arm. Livestock approved for drought aid in BV County; 40% grazing losses (04/12/01)
The LAP will reimburse livestock producers for grazing losses due to drought in the 2000 crop year. The USDA's deputy administrator in Washington, D.C. made this designation after BV County showed a 40 percent grazing loss. Weinert is a junior music major and Grieme is a sophomore elementary education major at the Orange City college. This year's program included music about two interrelated themes "God's gift to us" and "Our commitment to God." The program included familiar titles like "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" and "Beautiful Savior." It also included songs that stretched the audience like "Vamvuvama," which is Swahili for "He was crucified for us," and "Siyahamba," Swahili for "We are walking in the light of God.". ...

Historically, it is not unusual for pelicans to be seen on Storm Lake, although it has been a number of years since they have been so visible. "We usually get some pelicans each year, but they are often located in the far reaches of Little Storm Lake, and people may not see them at all.
