Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The annual 5K walk and run cancer A.W.A.R.E.ness event was held Saturday, sponsored by Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. There were 250 people who registered and paid the entry fee and despite the cold morning, 160 participated, which pleased the committee.

Deb Langner, Trimark employee and cancer survivor, started the race with a few inspirational words and by sounding the horn.

Mel Kimblad sang the "Star Spangled Banner."

Organizers of the event posed at the finish line, awaiting the runners' arrival - Grace Ivy, Stacy Schlechten, Diane Porter, Mary Drey, Bekah Hansen and Deb Langner. While no official totals are in, the event raised about $5,000 which will be used to assist those in treatment for cancer.

Andras Fakras-Luck, a St. Mary's student from Hungary.

Seven-year cancer survivor and BVRMC employee Sue Speers joyfully came across the finish line following her run.

Winners were (men's division) Jared Ponsor 19:43, Rene Lopez 21:13 and Fakras-Luck,, 21:48; (women's division) Andriette Wickstrom 22:37, and sisters and BVRMC employees Tessa Rydberg 24:54 and Jamie Grieme 24:57. (Pictured in order are Tessa, Jamie, Andriette, Rene and Jared.)
