Another week gone by in the sports world with a lot to think about. Quite a lot in fact. From our State basketball tournaments, the NFL Combine event, college basketball tournaments to see who gets to advance to the big dance, it’s a busy time of year for sports. Instead of focusing on one subject, it’s time to bring back the quick hitters.
The past week was a pretty fun one with a couple of trips to Des Moines for the girls tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. Last week I mentioned how I enjoyed going to the Well and it was hardly any different this time around. It was fairly easy to navigate and to get the lay of the land not having previous been in the arena “underbelly” and on the floor.
The Newell-Fonda girls played really good basketball through their three games, but I believe that Springville’s experience of having seniors in that position before aided their victory over the Mustangs. It’s hard to overcome experience, but the best news for Newell-Fonda fans is how many players from this team, with that learning experience, are coming back next season. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them back in the 1A title game in 2019.
A couple of boys teams got close to reaching State falling just a little shy in the end. Given how the weather turned out on Monday, might be a little glad in the traveling regard, but still would have been nice to see someone punch a ticket to Wells Fargo Arena. Next year should be an interesting year for both girls and boys with some teams going through quite the turnover with graduation. Regardless, I’m certainly looking forward to it.
I feel like people put too much stock into the NFL Combine. A big 40 time is impressive, but they aren’t getting hit, no one is chasing them and they don’t have pads on. It’s cool to see your favorite college player run a 4.34 40 yard dash in a controlled setting. It’s awesome to see them do 25 reps at a 225 bench press. It’s amazing to see their cone dashes and all that other stuff that makes the combine what it is.
However, if they’re not in pads and it’s not a game situation, why do we put so much stock into this event? The combine has created players out of people who did nothing in college and suddenly that they can run at a certain speed and lift a lot, they’re suddenly a better player? Isn’t that what we have game tape for? Maybe I just don’t understand because I’m not an NFL scout or anything like that, but the entire process just seems overrated without actual football being played.
I will say that one person impressed me with their workouts and that was Central Florida’s Shaquem Griffin. Why? He only has one hand and he managed to 20 reps or so on the 225 pound bench press with a prosthetic hand. His 40 yard dash time is somewhat overrated though as he ran a 4.38 the first time and then a 4.58 the second. So, again, doesn’t mean a whole lot.
In what literally surprised me when I had a chance to glance at my phone on Friday besides updating social media was the announcement of Coach Brian Van Haaften at BVU stepping away to go coach at Dordt. I hardly get surprised with coaching changes so leave it to our local college to do it to me. Just seems like a transitional phase for the BVU basketball programs with both longtime coaches stepping away this season.
That along with football coach Grant Mollring coming into his second season in a few months, it’s a time of change almost at BVU. The next fall and winter seasons should be really interesting to see what the second year football coach and the first year basketball coaches can accomplish on the field/court.
I’m also getting tired of eSports. Playing a video game is not a sport and this is coming from a guy who has been playing games since Mario Brothers way back in 1989 when I started walking. I love video games, I love sports and I can tell you for sure that it is not a sport. Much like in the way that poker and professional wrestling are not sports. Do these things take training, some skill and teamwork? You bet.
But sitting in a computer chair with a few buddies/teammates is not a sport. It’s a spectacle. There are some amazing people playing these games for stuff like the Overwatch League but they aren’t athletes. At least pro wrestlers have to jump around a little bit.
So those are my quick hitter this week. Do you agree, disagree with anything? Let me know at email@example.com.
