This week is simple. Sometimes I get random sports thoughts that pop in my head that aren’t worth an entire column over, yet are more of a quick hitter that just needs a couple of lines and I’m fine with it.
First of all I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I would love to see a shot clock in high school basketball. Granted it’s a huge pipe dream due to the cost and not every school being able to afford it, but I think it could help the game out quite a bit. I’m also sure quite a few coaches will disagree with me on this, and that’s okay, I just don’t enjoy watching a near minute long possession which can go a bit longer.
I’ve really been enjoying the Buena Vista basketball teams this year. A lot of great team play for the women and the men. Both teams are playing good basketball, and the men are lighting up the scoreboard with just outstanding shooting. For the ladies, I’ve enjoyed seeing the local products playing so well. Just been a really good season so far for Beaver basketball and if you haven’t been paying attention, you’re missing some great stuff.
That also isn’t to say we haven’t been enjoying some really good high school play this season either. I’ve been waiting to get a high school dunk photo since I started here and I got one last week which I was pretty excited about. Lot of a great players in the area after I looked through some stats. Choosing player of the year is going to be a tough race for boys and girls.
The other day I read a story about a youth basketball team in Ohio, I think it was Ohio, but anyways, this story made me sick to my stomach. This team had not only a sexually suggestive name, but they also had racist names on their jerseys. How this can manage to exist in 2018 baffles me. The players and the coach thought it was just something funny to do. If you haven’t read about it, it’s pretty easy to find, or at least should be rather easy to find.
Is it just me or is the NBA not entertaining anymore. Sometimes, like at 1 a.m. they’ll show a replay of that night’s game on ESPN, one of the FOX Sports channels or TNT and I’m just not entertained by it. I feel like it’s all about the self rather than the team. That’s not basketball. Basketball is a team game, which is why I enjoy watching the Spurs because they get it. They don’t sign all the free agents to win titles, they try to build up as much as they can and play together.
The Oakland Raiders, even without Al Davis, continue to do the most Raider things in professional football. Hiring Jon Gruden in 1998 was a great move. Hiring Jon Gruden in 2018 is not a great move. Yes, the guy was a good coach for a few years, but his last couple of seasons with Tampa Bay were rather lackluster. Granted, with the coordinators he hired, Gruden has a shot at something decent, but as a retread, I just don’t see it happening at all. Plus you combine this with the eventual move to Vegas and it’s going to be a long few years for the black and silver.
One of my favorite seasons is upcoming, NFL draft season. I keep up on the mocks all year long and I love making my own first round out almost yearly. It’s a fun tradition and with the Browns commanding so much in this year’s draft, will this finally be the year they escape the cellar and move on to bigger and better things? Probably not. Regardless, the draft is always super fun for me and I know a lot of others that enjoy it. Expect more on this in March/April as it gets closer.
Iowa State football is getting some way too early for 2018 love from the USA Today, slotting them at the tail end of the way too early for 2018 poll. This is quite a jump for Cyclone and Cyclone fans to actually see some sort of, dare I say, expectations? Regardless, it’s nice to see Iowa State getting rewarded for their surprising 2018 seasons. Hopefully they, along with the Hawkeyes, can put together good seasons again with bowl wins to help bring some national respect to our major Iowa schools.
And finally, baseball season is almost here. The boys, and girls, of summer are going to arrive very soon, probably sooner than any of us realize right now. The crack of the bats will ring in our ears and we’ll complain that it’s too hot.
