Deep state’, loosely defined from Google (as we all know, is a loose definition unto itself), is a body of people, usually influential members of government agencies, such as the military, believed to be involved in the secret manipulation, and control, of government policy. White House spokesperson Sean ‘Spicey’ Spicer doesn’t rule out that concept, but in regards to the previous presidential administration.
Deep state will go down as a 2017 term, resurrected to explain a lot of stuff that looks too covert, crazy, and conceptually whacky for what’s happening with not only our own government, but around the world. Sometimes we find out about government manipulation years after the fact as information gets released (Nixon/Watergate, Reagan and the Iran-Contra scandal), and sometimes we never find out, and history moves ahead, unabashed and unadulterated. Yet, at times, we get information such as deep state concepts like a livestream, given our as-it-happens social media society.
I wanted to find out more about the deep state concept, so I did some digging. In recent years, “deep state” was used to describe Turkey’s government back in the late 1990’s. Since then, the term has taken on a conspiracy theory type affluence, the “state within a state,” so to speak. This kind of talk reminds me of the 1962 neo-noir thriller “The Manchurian Candidate,” about a decorated war veteran who gets brainwashed, by the Soviets (those damn Russians, as per usual!) to commit an assassination on a U.S. political candidate. Angela Lansbury gives a truly creepy performance as the mother of the assassin, as she turns out to be a Russian spy, using her son to influence the United States presidential election. One of many great characters in a film that holds up today (better than the 2004 version, I believe), and it’s worth checking out. Man, sometimes fact is stranger than fiction, isn’t it, and looky what we’ve got going on in the good ol’ U.S. of A today...
Every new government brings a new cast and crew that can really make you wonder how the “deep state” functions. Notice I didn’t say “if” it functions, because I’ve always suspected the puppeteer behind the puppets, so no matter what you believe, for the sake of argument, let’s just go from here. But the one dude who truly stands out as a thoroughbred in this race is Steve Bannon, White House chief strategist/assistant to the Donald. The blotchy, one-too-many-Scotches appearance of Bannon seems to underlie a brilliant, and seemingly cunning, mover and shaker. Once the darling of Brietbart News, Bannon has even come off as “Cromwellian” to THEM even – no mean feat. Bannon has been quoted more than once that he would like to “blow up the state,” and remake government in a form that he, and others in the Trump inner circle, see fit. “Darkness is good,” Bannon told the ‘Hollywood Reporter,’ “Dick Cheney, Darth Vader, Satan.” You know, normally I would get a chuckle out of a good ol’ anti-establishment poke in the ribs such as that, but I dunno, I’m just a tad creeped out.
Bannon has compared himself to Lenin in style-points to redo government. All this stuff is just over the top, as I’m numbed to the point where it’s like, okay, whatever pal, let’s see what you do with that. I’m beyond reproach, because it’s been like watching a car crash in slow motion since mid-January, as far as our government goes. Seemingly, I have learned a “wait and see” approach – I guess I can afford it, but I know others can’t, or won’t. I don’t know if this helps, but there have been even weirder times in our governmental history.
Bannon was raised Irish/Catholic, which shouldn’t weigh in on his past anti-Semitic comments and views, as well as his misogynistic outlook. Bannon seems like a mystery character that’s been hanging around the fringes of society, poking around the balloon, trying to get in, which he does, finally. Now, having the ear of Trump, the wizard gets to unleash his potent magic on the masses. We are in for an eye-opening four years, for sure. Golly, Mr. Peabody, what’s going to happen? Well, Sherman, I don’t know, but as with past history, it helps to pay close attention.
As they say on the street, it’s gonna be a freakshow,
