A year in tears... and a few smiles

Posted Monday, December 31, 2012, at 2:25 PM

Hip, hip hooray... 2012 will soon be a memory! I can't remember a year that I was so in a hurry to put behind me.

I feel so negative when I think about how much I resent the 2012 calendar year. I feel so guilty for allowing the negative to overshadow the good events that happened to us! We surely have been blessed and we do thank God for all that we have but I sure would enjoy a more relaxing and calm year.

We had dealt with Michael's accident where he was paralyzed in April. What a horrific moment that was when we were told that he would be paralyzed from the chest down for the rest of his life. Out of that horrifying event however did come an overwhelming outpouring of concern and support from many that stretched from one side of the state to the other. We made some lasting friendships and gained more respect for Michael for his hard work that has allowed him to take 60 steps with a walker to date! We also have a closer relationship with our religion and find ourselves giving thanks more often.

We said good-bye to Craig's Dad this past summer. 2012 kept this good man down. Bernie surly was a trooper throughout the first 6 months of the year. He had many weak moments where he could not get out of bed, but that didn't stop him from making an appearance at the hospital to see Michael and at the benefit for his grandson; who by the way shared his birthday with him. The Sunday prior to his passing Burnell met his newest great-grandson Brayden. Bernie loved kids and to see him hold that baby and admire and speak softly to him was priceless. It was a sad day when Burnell left us. But we also celebrated his birthday and the fact that he entered the glorious gates of Heaven all in the same day. The final moments of his life were celebrated with his family at his bedside and we shed tears of joy that he no longer suffered and that he was reunited with those that had passed before him.

We also said good-bye to a very dear friend this year. Losing Jim was one of those tragic times in one's life when you take a step back and reevaluate your priorities. Losing someone long before we think that they should die is a bit numbing. From this too we learned that family is important, friends should be a priority and we should live as Jim did, give of yourself and enjoy life to its fullest!

Like I said, there were also some moments in 2012 that were truly enjoyed. In June we welcomed another grandson to our family. Brayden is another one of those blessings that we so enjoy. He is such a fun bundle of boy! The dimples on him will surly melt the girl's hearts. We also celebrated not only Brayden's baptism but the baptism of Kash the other bundle of boy that we are fortunate to call Grandson.

I went to my first ever Hawkeye Game! I finally got to meet those new friends that helped me spiritually get through the sadness felt when Michael was injured. Even though the Hawks lost that game, they are still winners in my book. No fair-weather fan here folks!

We gained a new four legged furry friend in April. Ellie, a Terrier mix has brought us so much joy with her energy and affection. Yes there are times when I wonder what was I thinking of when I answered the online ad asking for someone to adopt her...but that thought quickly gets erased when she snuggles in to my neck and looks at me with that furry puppy face.

I guess that if I were to take a long hard look back, it was a year filled with many positives and not so many negatives, unfortunately the negatives hit us pretty hard and it took some soul searching to find the good in the bad that had occurred. I am grateful for the many people in my life that had made such a difference in how I handled the hard knocks...for without those dear family and friends and my faith to lean on I would have fallen quite hard. I pray for a calm 2013 not only for myself but for all, let us celebrate the good, the bad and the indifferent for we know that at the end of next year we will have yet another to look forward to!
