Going with the flow...

Posted Monday, July 2, 2012, at 2:52 PM

If we survived the stresses that we experienced all in one day recently, we can survive almost anything!

So many times we hear, "God only gives you as much as you can handle", well He must have thought that we were in need of a little nudge to remind us of that.

We had spent weeks preparing for the benefit to help with my stepson's added medical expenses since the accident that had paralyzed him. So much goes into planning and executing such an event and some times it did get a bit overwhelming. By that I mean the kindness that we had seen within days of the benefit had me in tears numerous times. Perfect strangers were willing to give of their time and money, not to mention our friends and family. I had thought at one point that I had no more tears to shed, lo and behold with every kind gesture came a few more.

To add to the stress of making sure that the benefit would come off without a hitch, my youngest daughter was getting close to her due date and our grandson was about to make his appearance. Robyn had been having contractions throughout the week prior and we had made many trips to OB in the middle of the night just to be told that she needs to go home and rest and we will see what the next day would hold. We were cool with that. However Robyn had predicted since the date of the benefit was set that she would go into labor on that day. We kind of just let that thought go, until that morning when I got the call that she thought a visit to the hospital was on her to do list.

OK, we can do this, we can fit this in. There are plenty hours of the day left where we could have the baby and Grandma could then make it to greet those that came to support Michael. No problem! Well while waiting to see what the plan was, I get a text from my stepdaughter and a call from my husband. Jill was headed to the ER. It seems that she was involved in an accident and being transported to the very same hospital where we were waiting to see if we were going to welcome a new baby. Even more frazzled, I raced to ER. By the Grace of God she'd suffered only some glass cuts. The van didn't fare as well, but that didnt matter, they were all ok!

Back to Obstetrics, where again we were sent home. For me that was ok, I could focus on doing my part to make sure that the benefit was a success. As it turned out, the benefit was very successful, there were many in attendance and we were fortunate enough to even have the mother to be in attendance.

What I had learned from the stressful Saturday was to relax and go with the flow. Nothing is gained by losing my composure and God knew my limitations and only gave me as much as I could handle. By the way, we were graced by the birth of Brayden Lee Diekman Monday following the benefit. What another beautiful gift from God!
