An Anniversary Reminder

Posted Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 8:19 AM

Is it just me or does it seem that time just seems to get away from us quicker than in years past?

Seven years ago I had written my very first column for the Pilot Tribune. It was titled "Grandma's Getting Married". If I recall the jist of it, I wrote about gearing up for a trip to Vegas to marry my best friend and all that we had done to prepare...plus I do believe that I had mentioned a bit about my age and that fact that it was OK that a Grandma was getting married!

Subsequently I wrote a column on our experiences in Vegas. I may have even spoke of how I had my photo taken with Elvis! That was close to being the highlight of my first excursion to a city that never sleeps. For me the "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" wasn't a path that I had taken. There was so much to talk about... I just had to share.

So much time has passed since that 22nd day of January 2005, so many changes in our lives. We went from having two granddaughters at that time to having eight granddaughters and one grandson... and yes another bundle of joy is on its way. We have since moved four times, traded vehicles four times, have had; not all at once mind you, five cats and two dogs. We have gone on four vacations, none back to Vegas however. Even though it holds a special place in my heart - my goodness we were united in marriage there - it seems a bit too busy for Grandma at this point in her life! Not that I am ready for a retirement home, but I much rather enjoy the beaches of somewhere warmer than Iowa in the winter, or the mountains of Colorado on a warm summer's day.

We have been blessed these past seven years. We have wonderful kids all six of them, our son-in-laws are fantastic additions to our family nucleus, all of our grandkids are God's blessings to us, our parents have embraced the additional masses with open arms and together we have some wonderful friends. We are blessed beyond belief to have a stable and flourishing relationship. We continue to be open and honest with each other, we are there for the other to share daily struggles and achievements, we pick each other up when there seems as though there is nothing to smile about...and yes he can still make me laugh!

I must confess, I would not be sharing the fact that Craig and I are celebrating our seven-year wedding anniversary Sunday without Divine Intervention. While settled in our pew last Sunday skimming through the bulletin prior to the service, I came across an announcement that had both of us looking at each other in utter confusion. Underneath the wedding anniversaries - "Craig and Trudy Schroeder January 22"! Oops, so much had gone on in our lives I guess it sort of got lost in the shuffle. But what better place to be reminded of our blessings than God's House?

Happy Anniversary Craig, I so look forward to many more and yes I will try to remember next year.
