Grandma needs some innings of football

Posted Friday, September 23, 2011, at 4:10 PM

The streak ends and now a new chapter begins.

Within a matter of seven years, we as grandparents have welcomed eight wonderful granddaughters into our hearts. Following many years of tolerating, let me rephrase that, after years of nurturing four wonderful daughters and welcoming yet another daughter to the mix as my husband and I blended our families, I know a little about the female gender.

No I haven't forgotten Michael, the only boy in the mix other than the son in laws and my husband of course. However Michael was in 5th grade when we first had met, so I really hadn't much hands for the early part of his growth.

I was so proud and excited as each and every granddaughter was born, and also when our daughters married and welcomed a few more granddaughters through those marriages. We have been so blessed to have such a world full of pinks and princesses. We have gone from little baby dolls, Dora and Miley Cyrus to Justin Bieber. We have watched as they wobbled about as they had learned to walk, to wobbling as they prance about in platform flip flops. It's not uncommon to see fake nails, hair ties and Barbie things left following a visit to our home.

Fortunately we will soon welcome yet another grandchild to our family. We are so excited, just as we are with the birth of any addition to our brood. This one however may be a bit of a change for me. This child from what the ultrasounds say won't be wearing a lot of pink nor will this one be playing much with Barbies or require many hair ties.

This number nine grandchild is said to be a BOY! Yes, I said a male, one of those that I have not had much experience with, as far as the infant moments.

As I try to wrap my head around the fact that I will be learning a few new tricks as far as diaper changing and chatting with a little guy goes, I feel a bit overwhelmed.

How does this little man thing work? I am pretty good with teaching the girls baking, cleaning, and I enjoy playing little girl games with the granddaughters, but now... I need to practice with the Hot Wheels, tractors and I really need to get a few innings in as far as football; is that right football innings or is that baseball? Oh I need to start investigating this boy phenomena, and do this quickly.

As the day nears to where we welcome another member to our loving family, the excitement is evident, not solely because this baby is a boy, but also because each and every addition to our family is a blessing. However, we need to fill the toy box with more than play dresses and strollers, we need to go shopping for Tonka trucks and footballs and we have to do this soon!
