Where did the energy go?

Posted Monday, August 30, 2010, at 12:14 PM

Being a grandparent is sometimes tiring work, being a parent has to be more so.

I'm finding out that either I am not as young as I had once thought or that kids now are a bit more energetic than they once were. We have been busy the past couple of weekends entertaining young chicks, which happen to be grandchildren and even when there was only one little one year old, it was exhausting. Not saying at all that she was naughty, just saying that keeping up with her kept me busy. Then the following weekend we were lucky enough to have three at once which ranged from the age of just a few months to almost 7...lets just say that by the end of the weekend Grandma was worn to nothing.

I love having the little onces around, they are so funny and I love the fact that they love the affectionate hugs and kisses that we as grandparents love to dish out. Nothing better than having a little one sit on your lap with their arms stretched around your neck and in Abby's case giving funny looks as you nibble on her ear trying to get her to laugh.

It was somewhat of a merry-go-round of events while trying to entertain an almost 7 year old as I tried to keep the almost 5 year old under control, all while the the smallest of granddaughters was in need of some attention too. Wow, now I know why I had my kids while I was younger. My children often ask how I did it with four, by the time Saturday evening came around, I was wondering the exact same thing! I at that point realized why when the girls were young why my house was in such disarray and how I had kept my girlish figure. One never stops running, either cleaning a dirty face or a dirty diaper, trying to keep one happy while the other is disappointed because you try to keep the other happy and they seem forgotten.

I have a newfound respect for all young parents, trying to find time to keep the kids happy, not to mention themselves, all while working full time, trying to keep somewhat of an orderly house and finding time to relax, they seem to be unreachable at my age. To all of you I bow down and say that you indeed deserve medals!
