Farewell Storm LakePosted Friday, September 24, 2010, at 3:55 PM
After two years in Storm Lake, Journalism Jen is on to new adventures. I recently was offered the position as news editor of the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune, a weekly paper south of Des Moines. Osceola is a nice central location to my family. I've been wanting to move closer to family after my mom passed away. I just wish she was here. Dad told me she'd be so proud. Writing is in my blood. Mom was a freelance writer and Grandma used to teach english.
Plus Osceola is only two hours and forty-five minutes from my niece (to be born in December.) And I've also heard they get less snow down there, can't pass that up. I have really enjoyed my time in Storm Lake. When I came to SL the only thing I really knew about the town was that it was located in Iowa. Over the course of a few years, I've learned so much and come to really adore this unique community. As a reporter, I know the meaning of the phrase 'starving artist.' I didn't major in journalism for the money, I majored in it for the experiences and the people I'd meet. I've had some experiences here I will never forget. For the past week I've felt a bit like a chicken with its head cut off as I run around trying to make sure I get everything done before I leave. I've been trying to figure out a way to multitask while I sleep. I haven't found a way yet. I had forgotten how much of a chore it is to pack. I'm convinced my stuff is multiplying as I pack. I managed to find the floor underneath all the boxes last night so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I think there is a good possibility I've restocked the shelves at Goodwill. After I told my family the news of my new job, my dad and brother quickly began making plans to get a trailer. Don't get too excited, I don't have a place yet, I told them. Thankfully I do now. Phew. Although I'm sad to be leaving, I'm excited about the new chapter. I will miss you guys. Please keep in touch. |

I grew up in Northcentral Iowa. I attended Iowa State University where I received a B.A. Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and had an emphasis on Child and Family Studies. I moved to Storm Lake in 2008 to work for the Pilot-Tribune, after working for a daily paper in Nebraska. When I'm not busy typing like a mad woman, peering from behind a camera lens or interviewing all sorts of new and exciting people, you can probably find me rollerblading/biking the paved paths of Storm Lake, strumming out a few notes on my guitar, walking numerous dogs all at once in Newell. I am also a member of Faith Bible, a member of the Shayla Bee family, the SL Kiwanis and a longtime member of the Twizzlers Annonymous Support group. Wink Wink.
