Birthday

Posted Friday, May 21, 2010, at 1:03 PM

I was born 26 years ago today. (I was born on a Monday - I love to joke and say I was born to hate Mondays). I weighed in at 6 pounds, 9 oz and was 19 1/2 inches long..... it's hard to believe I was ever measured in inches. haha. For those of you know me know I'm a lanky 6 footer. My brother was only three when I was born and could not wait for the day he'd have a playmate. He was greatly disappointed when he learned that all I did was lay around all day in a crib and cry. My mother asked him if she should just get rid of me, since I was of no use to him......'yes,' he said. "Should we just throw her in the woods?" "Yep!" She picked me up and began walking towards the woods...... he came running after her and shouted 'No no Mommy stop." "You want to keep her after all?" He nodded.

So what happened in 1984?

1984 was....

-a leap year

-Space Shuttle Challenger is launched on the 10th space shuttle mission

- The Winter Olympics are held in Sarajevo, SFRJ.

-An overnight flash flood rages through neighborhoods in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Nearly 15 inches of rain falls in some areas over a four-hour period. 14 persons are killed. (My sister in law is from the Tulsa area)

-A deadly F5 tornado nearly destroys the town of Barneveld, Wisconsin, killing 9 people, injuring nearly 200, and causing over $25,000,000 in damage.

-Aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan becomes the first American woman to perform a space walk.

-The world learns from moving BBC News TV reports that a famine is plaguing Ethiopia, where thousands of people have already died of starvation due to a famine and as many as 10,000,000 more lives are at risk.

-The Soviet Union announces that it will boycott the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

-Genetic fingerprinting or DNA profiling was developed.

-Movies including Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop, Terms of Endearment, The Karate Kid, Star Trek III and The Terminator.

-A gallon of gas cost $1. 10.

Hey- I grew up in Northcentral Iowa. I attended Iowa State University where I received a B.A. Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and had an emphasis on Child and Family Studies. I moved to Storm Lake in 2008 to work for the Pilot-Tribune, after working for a daily paper in Nebraska. When I'm not busy typing like a mad woman, peering from behind a camera lens or interviewing all sorts of new and exciting people, you can probably find me rollerblading/biking the paved paths of Storm Lake, strumming out a few notes on my guitar, walking numerous dogs all at once in Newell. I am also a member of Faith Bible, a member of the Shayla Bee family, the SL Kiwanis and a longtime member of the Twizzlers Annonymous Support group. Wink Wink.
