Shayla Bee's 32nd Family!!
Posted Friday, July 23, at 2:36 PM
The Shayla Bee group will be making its 32nd family donation to the Gardewine family of Rolefe, IA. They have a daughter, Avery, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in April. The group will depart from S&S Cycleworks at 3 p.m. July 24. Hope you can make it!!
The Shayla Bee group helps responsible working class families, with a child and limited financial means, in times of medical crisis. The group was formed as a living memory to a sweet little girl named Shayla. This little gal was born on December 4th 1998, with a condition called Schizencephaly. Her 6 year battle was an inspiration to her family and all who loved and cared for her. Her 18 year old mother went from a troubled single mom, to a 24 hour a day, seven day a week caregiver in a heartbeat. Her devotion to Shayla was a true inspiration. It is baffling how a handicapped child can have such a profound impact on so many lives, but she did and continues to to this day. To learn more visit www.myspace.com/shaylabeefund

Drivers Ed It's that time of year again - Driver's Ed -youngsters with a big ol'grin on their face because they are one step closer to getting their licenses. Freedom. I applaud those teachers who are able to risk their lives every day, year after year after year, riding with these new inexperienced drivers. Those of us who have been driving a while know to give them plenty of room. I have to say though, they are getting harder to spot these days. What is with them driving brand new cars?...
Birthday I was born 26 years ago today. (I was born on a Monday - I love to joke and say I was born to hate Mondays). I weighed in at 6 pounds, 9 oz and was 19 1/2 inches long..... it's hard to believe I was ever measured in inches. haha. For those of you know me know I'm a lanky 6 footer. ...
Car Shopping Well the challenging task of car shopping has begun. I want the perfect one - perfect gas mileage, plenty of room and comfort, no repairs needed for many many years and is cute and sporty (no more old lady rides!!) Oh and we can't forget to mention that it has to be inexpensive... heck maybe free!! :D But unfortunately the perfect car doesn't exist. And neither does the perfect guy...
Attention high school youth in rural areas!! Hey- Are you a junior or senior living in a rural area in Iowa? You could win an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. through your Rural Electric Cooperative. I did. I was chosen to represent my cooperative - Heartland Power Cooperative of Thompson, IA in 2002 in the Youth Tour. My trip was entirely sponsored Heartland...
Police find missing student; remembering an athlete Well ISU police found the body of missing ISU student Jon Lacina, who has been missing since January 30. With as much snow as we had I know there were many who worried they'd find his body buried somewhere in the snow piles. After extensive air, ground and water searches, a police officer found the body of a male in a building on the former ISU Dairy Farm - he was later identified as Lacina. The cause of death is still under investigation...
One liners Here are a couple one liners for your Friday afternoon.... 1) A bus is a vehicle that runs twice as fast when you are after it as when you are in it. 2) A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist. 3) If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you!...
Shopping So I started car shopping Saturday afternoon with the folks. I test drove three very cute little cars.... all three of which I loved driving!! (and have awesome gas mileage) Okay so when you drive a car that's as old as mine, as noisy and hot as mine and as painful as mine - any newer car feels like a dream! haha. I really noticed a difference when I got back in my car to drive home...
first set of wheels Hey, what a beautiful day outside! It has to wait until I purchase a new car until it can get really warm out! I practically suffocated enough as it was just driving to work today. My driver's side window is broken and I don't roll it down because I have to pull it up manually with two hands and a lot of muscle power. ...
Sheesh..... The Iowa ACLU has launched an investigation into whether Winnebago County (my home county by the way) officials violated the constitution by displaying displaying a Christmas (oops did I say Christmas out loud? I meant Holiday) Nativity (can we still say Nativity?) scene for more than three months on the courthouse lawn. ...
You know you need a new car when..... You know you need a new car when.....

Don't lose hope Linke family! Zailin Linke, Alta, just celebrated his third birthday on Saturday!! Zailin has a brainstem tumor and doctors gave him 12-18 months to live after discovering the tumor last May. He runs around with the energy of a typical three year old, you wouldn't guess he was sick if you saw him on the street...
If Iowa hosted the olympics Although the entire country has seen some snow - some of us more than others obviously - somehow Canada missed out and had to bring in snow for the olympics. Sheesh. Well if they need to borrow any of ours it's theirs for the taking. Winter games in Iowa -...
I can't wait for spring I can't wait for spring! The sunshine we've had the last couple of days is promising. A co-worker was just mentioning how she couldn't believe that March was almost here.... I'm glad that we're all that much more closer to spring. I hope we don't see another winter like the one we just saw for a very long time...
RAGBRAI here I come!! Well I've submitted an application to be part of RAGBRAI this year. I don't plan to ride the whole thing - just want to ride from Sioux City to Storm Lake, a chance to get my feet wet and get somewhat of an idea of what RAGBRAI is all about. There is no way at this point I could physically ride the entire distance. Their journal will end in Dubuque...
Shayla Bee's 27th Family Come support Shayla Bee and Shayla Bee families this Saturday as they make their 27th donation! The Steven and Bridget Lytle Family, Spencer, have a 2 year old daughter with a hole in her heart, severe enough that she will be having heart surgery in February. A doctor from Chicago will be coming to Sioux Falls to perform the surgery...
Resolutions.... What are your resolutions for this year? Here are some silly ones I've heard.... 1) I will balance my checkbook (on my nose - haha....I agree just lately it's been depressing, especially when I have to keep writing 'I owe myself $50' in the message line)...
More blessings I'm also thankful for technologically savvy uncles! After I got home from a stressful end of the weekend break down (the period between a car breakdown and the call from the mechanic is one of the most stressful experiences!! I am not familiar with cars at all so unless it needs oil, more pressure in the tires or gas in the tank.... ...

I grew up in Northcentral Iowa. I attended Iowa State University where I received a B.A. Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and had an emphasis on Child and Family Studies. I moved to Storm Lake in 2008 to work for the Pilot-Tribune, after working for a daily paper in Nebraska. When I'm not busy typing like a mad woman, peering from behind a camera lens or interviewing all sorts of new and exciting people, you can probably find me rollerblading/biking the paved paths of Storm Lake, strumming out a few notes on my guitar, walking numerous dogs all at once in Newell. I am also a member of Faith Bible, a member of the Shayla Bee family, the SL Kiwanis and a longtime member of the Twizzlers Annonymous Support group. Wink Wink.
