To my Valentine
Posted Thursday, February 9, at 9:57 AM
When I met my husband, our relationship was like wearing a pair of tight shoes. It was often uncomfortable, as we got to know each other. Now that we have been together for 24 years, those shoes have been broken in and are comfortable. We were watching a new television show a while back the called "Meet the Newlyweds." Of course, it was a realty show involving several newlyweds and of course the focus is to see how well these newly married couples know their spouses. ...

Degrees well earned
Posted Thursday, January 19, at 1:18 PM

When I was a young girl I dreamed of being a nurse; my mother was sick all of my growing up years and I wanted to be able to take care of her. In those same "playing" years, playing school always provided great fun; I especially liked being the teacher, sharing with my "students" made up of stuffed animals...

Another auld lang syne
Posted Wednesday, January 11, at 3:10 PM

Happy New Year. Another year - it's a new start but also it means we all turn a year older, too. Oh gracious - that means I will break down even a little bit more than I did in 2011. My kids have no sympathy for me when I tell them the same story more than once, more than twice even, but laugh at me. ...

A song for Ashley
Posted Tuesday, January 3, at 11:25 AM

Early last week, Zach Nixon of Aurelia ran in to Ashley Kruse at the local Casey's. Their conversation was short but Ashley recalled the fun they used to have when they were choir members at Aurelia High School. "We need to get the choir back together and sing," she said at the end of their conversation. "Yeah, we do," Zach responded...

Too much egg nog or what?
Posted Tuesday, December 27, at 11:38 AM

It was quite the weekend. I was commanded to act like Frankenstein and my only form of communication was grunts and groans. I became a member of the Lollipop Guild (not much different than the size I really am) and sang the Munchkin song to my kids...

Brown Christmas
Posted Tuesday, December 20, at 11:25 AM

'Twas four days before Christmas eve, the weather, so fine and sunny. It felt as though soon we'd see the Easter Bunny. Unusual warm temperatures and no snow in sight, Put on those sunglasses to keep out the bright. Children and adults have been out in shorts and tees,...

Ice isn't so nice
Posted Wednesday, December 14, at 3:16 PM

In my book, winter is officially here (though not according to the calendar.) We were fortunate enough to receive our "much-awaited" (right!) first snow last weekend and a little dusting during the annual Miracle on Lake Avenue event on Thursday AND I had my first fall on the ice...

Do we really know Santa?
Posted Tuesday, December 6, at 10:09 AM

Christmas is getting closer. I have been pondering over Santa Claus and want to run some of these ideas by you. I saw Santa at the wonderfully animated Santa's Castle recently and he asked me if I had been naughty or nice. (I answered naughty just to keep him thinking.)...

Put a sock in it
Posted Tuesday, November 29, at 9:48 AM

I love quotes and sayings but some of them are really bizarre. I did a little investigating to find out the meaning and origin of some of the quotes we have heard a hundred times over. Meaning - It's better to have something small and reliable than something big and risky...

Reasons to be thankful
Posted Wednesday, November 23, at 4:01 PM

It is that time of year when we all should sit down (if time allows it, with the rush, rush of holiday preparations) to reflect on what we are thankful for. Because I don't have to get the turkey in the oven for another couple days, I am sitting down and doing just that - although if my husband and son had had it their way, we would have eaten the turkey already and the traditional truck load of Chex mix...

Marriage from a child's view
Posted Wednesday, November 16, at 4:09 PM

I'm up for a good laugh, how about you? How about marriage? That's a good topic to laugh about. My husband and I observed our 23rd anniversary over the weekend (that's not the joke) but somewhere I discovered these questions, dealing with marriage and dating, answered by kids and I laughed and laughed. I hope you will get a good laugh today, too...

Daylight Savings Time blues
Posted Tuesday, November 8, at 2:04 PM

Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care? The words of this old Chicago song rang out in my head Sunday morning when I was quite sure that the time had changed due to Daylight Savings Time ending, but then was unsure when I realized the time on my phone had not changed...

How 'regular' are you?
Posted Wednesday, November 2, at 10:05 AM

It is not unusual for me to ask my family members and friends if they are "regular". It's just part of life and makes life more enjoyable if you are; no one likes to be irregular! So how regular are you? There are many things that we should be regular at...

What happens in Vegas
Posted Wednesday, October 26, at 2:33 PM

They say that what happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas. I spent last week there and I am revealing to you - I did not marry an Elvis and I did not get married by an Elvis (though there were many Elvis' there to select from!) My sister, her daughter and I went there to celebrate our "decade" birthdays - my sister is 10 years older than me, her daughter 10 years nearly to the day younger than me. ...

Senior Citizens Unite
Posted Wednesday, October 19, at 3:22 PM

I am a "young" senior citizen and will soon qualify for those discounts - I am already getting information from AARP which totally puts me in the senior citizen category. I received the following and want to share it. Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others...

The paths that we take
Posted Wednesday, September 28, at 3:02 PM

I have taken many paths in my life, as you have. But do you ever wonder where you would be if you would have gone left instead of right at that fork in the road? For instance, if I had not decided after three years of working at the Northwest Iowa Review that I wanted to move on and landed a job at the Ames Tribune, only to be on staff for three months before a buy-out occurred and was sent out the door because cuts had to be made and then sent out a zillion applications to other print medias and waited patiently month after month to be hired on at the Pilot Tribune, I may not have met my husband or had the four great kids I've got.. ...

Mom's laundry back in business
Posted Wednesday, September 21, at 3:28 PM

Our house went from having two girls this weekend to having five. Marissa invited three college friends home with her and Meghan surprised us all by popping home to see, I am sure not me, but her sister whom she had not seen since going to college on Aug. 19. (That is maybe the longest the sisters had gone without seeing one another.)...

Are you ready for some football?
Posted Wednesday, September 14, at 2:37 PM

Fall is approaching, it is in the air. And that means many changes. Caterpillars, in their furry little coats, can be seen out wiggling around. When my kids were young, one of the highlights of the season was to go hunting for the fuzzy worms. There was always a good colony of them down our lane. ...

What kind of tater are you?
Posted Thursday, September 8, at 1:34 PM

I always leave church with many things to think about. Our minister at United Methodist Church Missy Brown always gives a good sermon. She has a way of throwing in a few jokes throughout her talks - we are not afraid to laugh out loud, either and I like that; church does not always have to be so serious. There is a lot of seriousness in the sermons as well and that is another reason I like her talks...

Do they need all that?
Posted Wednesday, August 24, at 3:20 PM

Moving girls to college is interesting. They brings more "stuff" than they will ever possibly need but at this age, you really can't tell them that because they still don't listen. Marissa helped move Meghan, a freshman, to Iowa State last week and was in awe of all of the bags she had packed with the things she could not live without at college and then as it turned out, Marissa, a second-year college student, who should know what she does and does not need, took more bags than Meghan on Sunday when she went back to Wayne State.. ...
