Four graduations done
Posted Wednesday, May 22, at 1:50 PM
Four high school graduations now over. We got Austin graduated on Sunday at Sioux Central without a hitch, but not without stress (that's just part of who I am.) One of the best parts of preparing for a graduation is getting out all those papers and art projects and photos that have been packed away for years...

Language is 'out to lunch'
Posted Wednesday, May 8, at 2:36 PM

English language is strange, isn't it? And the way slang is used is even more strange. I looked back over a few decades at how words are used to describe things. "Ape" - which we all know is an animal - was used in the '50s too describe someone who is mad. "He's gone ape!"...

Tales from the laundromat
Posted Wednesday, May 1, at 1:07 PM

With a dryer at home that sounds like a 747 taking off whenever we start it up, I have been taking my clothes to a laundromat. Laundromats are great additions to the business communities for those who do not own a washer and dryer or for those of us who are in need of a replacement...

Prom Memories - Priceless
Posted Wednesday, April 24, at 1:10 PM

Prom is in the air. It is a wonderful time for students to go out and spend as much of their parents' money as humanly possible. Many of the girls spend weeks going to tanning salons (even though their mothers have told them how bad it is for them to get those artificial tans) and spend hours at the nail salons getting fake nails put on and painted and then more hours getting their hair up dos...

It's test time
Posted Wednesday, April 17, at 3:04 PM

I walked into the high school classroom, sat down in a desk, not understanding why it felt snugger than the "day before." The teacher told everyone to settle down and get out a pencil 'cause we were having a quiz. A quiz? But I didn't study! Oh, my gosh! How was I going to get through that quiz! I didn't even know what class was being taught in that classroom!...

Happy Birthday to Me
Posted Wednesday, April 10, at 2:59 PM

I will celebrate another birthday on Wednesday, no, will observe another birthday, no, will be forced by law to add a year to my age due to another birthday. I will be 54. On Wednesday, I will have been alive for 19,724 days (including 14 Feb. 29ths) and have taken over a half million breaths of air...

Hog wild at grocery store
Posted Wednesday, April 3, at 2:26 PM

It was crazy busy in the local stores on Thursday. I stopped at one of the grocery stores to get a few things for the weekend. Anticipating the nice weather, my priority was getting some good meat for the grill. My cart was only half full when I finished - that does not happen too often - so I was pretty happy that the total cost would allow me a few extra dollars to get a couple chocolate Easter bunnies...

Lottery non-winner
Posted Wednesday, March 27, at 3:42 PM

Well, I am at work so you know what that means...I didn't win the $350 million lottery. I tried. I wasn't even going to be greedy - I didn't need the whole thing but a pile of it would have sure been nice. I heard there was one lone winner who hadn't come forward yet on Monday...

Music to drive by
Posted Thursday, March 21, at 8:33 AM

I love listening to music while traveling - but only if my girls aren't riding with me because then they think they need to be in control of the radio station. I don't care for the so-called music of today (how can it even be called music, really?) Rap really irritates me - if that is considered music...

What is time?
Posted Wednesday, March 13, at 4:30 PM

Time is defined as the point when something occurs but I often wonder, just like that old Chicago song, does anybody really know what time it is? (And does anybody really care?) I have my alarm clock set 10 minutes ahead of the actual time so that when I am awakened with the shrill buzzing each morning I will somehow forget that I have set my clock ahead and I will actually get moving and be ahead of schedule. ...

Patience, please
Posted Wednesday, March 6, at 2:39 PM

We learn at a young age to take turns. This is something that we use throughout our lives (unlike geometry skills and if someone wants to disagree, I was never required to take geometry in school and I have survived - I guess.) We waited our turns at the water fountain at school after recess - even though that was a tough wait; I often felt as though the fountain would be dried up by the time it was my turn and I would curl up like a bug from dehydration...

College shopping - again
Posted Wednesday, February 27, at 2:28 PM

College shopping has been a natural part of our lives for the past several years. This is the last year, for it, hopefully. Our baby will be graduating this spring. Like most students, he has received stacks of flyers and documents from colleges and universities across the nation telling him how wonderful their schools are and that he should attend...

The end of basketball
Posted Wednesday, February 20, at 2:55 PM

High school basketball season is over for many of the schools; some have the chance to play another game with high hopes of being among the best of the best and the chance to play at the state championship. The Sioux Central Rebel boys' basketball team, under the guidance of first-time head coach Stephen Tjaden, may not have had the best record this year but they never gave up, even when they were far behind, knowing that they did not have a chance to come back. ...

Small town life
Posted Thursday, February 14, at 10:56 AM

I get so many emails and so many of them make me laugh. This one I am sharing with you really brought smiles and I recalled my own life of growing up in a southwestern Minnesota town of 500. Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this. I have added a few comments (in parentheses.)...

Please replace the toilet paper
Posted Thursday, February 7, at 9:36 AM

I hate driving in fog and not knowing where I am and feeling that I am driving over the edge of the Earth. One of my biggest pet peeves is when drivers don't turn their headlights on. Hello. If you can't see two feet in front of you how do you think other drivers are going to see you. Put your lights on!...

Entering George Jetson's world
Posted Wednesday, January 30, at 3:15 PM

How much would you spend for gizmos that made your life easier? I recently heard that if you want to spend 70 grand on a new Lexus car that you will never have to worry about parallel parking again because a computer in the car does the parking for you. I saw a demonstration on a morning show a while back, showing the operation of the equipment. Hands are removed from the steering wheel and the car turns perfectly in between two cars, no bumping. It's wild but a sign of the technology future...

My husband's new gal
Posted Wednesday, January 23, at 4:09 PM

I had the opportunity to attend the ninth annual Women in Denim conference over the weekend. It is always great to pay tribute to those women that get right out there and help their husbands run their family farms. Always there are awesome keynote speakers invited to talk; most often they have farming backgrounds as well...

Hair today, gone tomorrow
Posted Thursday, January 17, at 11:55 AM

When I was growing up in the small town of Round Lake, Minn., there was only one place to get a haircut - Menk's Barber Shop. I don't even know for sure what the owner/barber's first name was - everyone always called him Menk (his last name.) There were no fancy beauty salons back then with pretty things hanging on the walls of serene colors...

The family that plays together...
Posted Wednesday, January 9, at 2:27 PM

The holidays are over and it's time for our lives to get back to normal. We have all eaten more than normal, had more time off than normal and have been around more people than we normally are. I don't know about you, but I am pooped out and ready now for hibernation (I have enough extra body fat to get me through the next several months and I rather enjoyed having those two short work weeks - I don't know how I will be able to put in a full work week.)...

Tired at work
Posted Wednesday, December 19, at 10:08 AM

Some days I get so tired at work that I can hardly keep my eyes open. Naps would be nice. Some of us have even talked about where we could lay our "kindergarten mats". We have discussed the idea of implementing afternoon naps and locking up the front door for an hour or two to our boss Kari and she doesn't really like the idea - something about us not being productive or something like that if naps were part of the day...
