Ten things that really bug me

Posted Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 1:54 PM

My last blog was about tiny, yappy dogs that owners fail to keep in check.

So this blog, I thought I'd go through a few other things that chap my hide.

Number 10: Cell phones.

I've never hidden the fact that I hate cellphones. Not that I don't think they can be useful. Having a cellphone when on long trips can come in handy should something happen and you need help. However, the phones I'm talking about aren't really even phones. So called "Smart phones", which allow you to do everything but mix your drink (I'm sure there's an app for that too) are getting out of hand. I've complained about them before, so I'll leave it at that for now. I don't ever plan on having one... cell service is too darn expensive.

Number 9: TV Commercials

I'm seeing more and more TV commercials that are so stupid, I wonder just who the advertiser is trying to reach. Being in the advertising business myself, I understand that you need to keep things simple, but simple doesn't mean stupid. The overwhelming idiocy of some of these TV commercials make me shake my head, and wonder just how much the advertiser had to pay for it, and how they could possibly have liked what they saw before it hit the airwaves. I guess some of them are trying to be cute, but to me, if the commercial is so stupid that I sit there in disbelief, it's sure not selling me on their product.

Number 8: Know-it-alls

I've met a few of these in person, but the majority seem to live online, and they love spreading their infinite wisdom all over the web. I read a lot of tech news, which allow readers to voice their opinions on the story, and invariably there's three or four that take the author to task for what they perceive to be inaccuracies, only to be chastised and corrected later by another online know-it-all. While it makes for interesting reading at times, it reminds me of the old saying: 'Opinions are like ---holes, everybody has one'.

Ironic that this is on my list, as this whole thing is just my opinion.

Number 7: Facebook, My Space, Twitter and all their ilk

Yes, I have a Facebook account. Yes it is a nice way to stay in touch with people you don't see often. But is it necessary for some people to put down everything little thing that happens to them? I can understand events like weddings, deaths, anniversaries and the like, but do I really need to know what you ate for lunch? I miss having phone conversations with people. I have some friends that would rather Facebook than talk on the phone. I would rather talk on the phone, it seems like more of a conversation,

Number 6: Drivers

Don't talk or text on your damn 'smartphone' when your freakin' driving! I would think that would be common sense, but it seems common sense is disappearing faster than they can come up with new 'smartphones'. There's a lot of people out there that have a hard enough time driving without tossing a 'smartphone' into the mix.

Number 5: Politics and Politicians

'Nuff said.

Number 4: BP

It amazes me that a company can be either too arrogant or too stupid not to have plans setup in case a disaster happens. How many millions of gallons of oil spewed into the ocean as they spent a month trying to fix a problem that they could have had plans in place for BEFORE they started drilling? Think this will get them on the ball? I doubt it.

Number 3: How sports stars can make so much money.

Way too much money flows the wrong way, in my humble opinion, to pay for people to entertain us. A coach a major college can make millions a year, while professors get sometimes less that six figure incomes. Who's more important? I know that sports pay for a lot things at universities, but teachers and professors are who we are putting our trust into to mold our youth into productive citizens. I would rather pay more for great teachers and less for coaches and pro athletes, so that maybe some of these students could, say, cure diseases... or discover new ideas that actually advance the human race. Not that I don't enjoy sports, but some sanity in who we pay what has got to take hold one day.

Number 2: Spam

This is a no brainer for anyone with an email account. And it seems no matter how many anti-spam programs or laws they make, it will never go away. At one point my anti-spam program had whittled my spam down to a few a day. A week later, it was back up to 25 or more a day, as they found away around the anti-spam program. It's almost as annoying as telemarketers used to be. Although spam is much easier to get rid of.

And, the number 1 thing that really bugs me..... Technology

I know, doesn't make much sense does it. I'm using technology to write this blog. I use technology to get to work everyday. I use technology to entertain myself.

It's not so much that I hate technology, I just have a hard time with it on occasion. Think about this... when the oil runs out, what will we power all of our technology with? Coal? Wind? Good ideas, but you can't run a car on coal. Haven't heard of many wind powered cars either. If there's no electricity, there's no computers, TV, lights, etc. Also, technology has advanced so much, how many people actually carry cash with them anymore? It's debit cards, credit cards, online bill pay and on and on. I don't even get a paycheck anymore, it's all paperless. There's actually no money changing hands anymore, it's all just numbers on a computer. If the system goes down, how will anyone pay for anything? Do we go back to the barter system? I have a cow, I'll trade you it for 5 chickens?

Technology is wonderful, don't get me wrong. But think of how different things would be if one day, you woke up and there was no electricity. That would mean no lights, no money (unless you have cash stashed in your mattress), no TV, no computer. You couldn't work. You couldn't purchase anything.

Anyway, I think I got the idea across. Technology is great, but when so much depends on it, you no longer depend on the most important thing in life, and that's each other.

'Til next time...
