It's tough sometimes....Posted Thursday, July 8, 2010, at 11:26 AM
It's tough sometimes to come up with something to say that may be interesting to other people. I find myself wanting to say things, but then I rethink it and decide that no one would probably care about that. Which is why I'm behind a bit on my usual schedule of updating my blog here.
But, something is happening this week that I just can't fathom. ESPN has decided that LeBron James needs a special one hour show to spend thirty seconds telling the world what basketball team he'll play for next year. Well whoop - de - doo! I find it sad that our society has more interest in what a basketball player is doing than on issues that are actually important. Plus, why is it that athletes get paid so much to play games? Are we that bored in our lives, or that bad at sports, that we pay outrageous prices to watch other people play games? Five million a year or more to play basketball. Yikes. Don't get me wrong, pro athletes work their butts off. But should we really be paying a baseball player ten million a year, when most of the time he's standing around scratching his crotch? Maybe if more of this money went to people that actually do something constructive in society, like say, teachers, society would be a much nicer place to be. I say spend more on education and less to pro sports. Spend more on health care and less to LeBron James. Are athletes fun to watch? Yes. Do they work hard for a living? Yes. Do they do anything but entertain us? Not really. Yes, a lot of them have great charities that raise money. But I think in all seriousness, that a million or two a year tops should be what athletes make. Maybe if there was a "salary cap" in all sports, more of these athletes would finish college, and while in college, take courses that will actually do them some good later in life. I don't begrudge them their success, they've earned it. But a lot of people work their butts off and never make a million dollars their whole life. Are they worth less just because they can't play sports? In our society, it certainly seems that way. 'Til next time... |
