World Cup Soccer and the NBA

Posted Monday, June 14, 2010, at 3:59 PM

I tried to watch the World Cup Soccer game between the US and England, I really did. Two things made me change the channel after 10 minutes. The first, and most important, was the constant noise created by the fans with those obnoxiously annoying horns. It sounded like a hive of bees had invaded my home. It was very distracting to me as a viewer, I can only imagine how annoying it was and is to the players trying to play the game. I understand as a fan you want to create a festive atmosphere, but that was so overwhelmingly loud, that there was no way I was going to continue watching the game.

The second reason? Well, to me it was.... boring. I understand that Soccer (or Futbol) is the world's sport. That's fine, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around it. Soccer is one of those games that's fun to play, like golf or baseball, but a snore to watch for the most part for me. Perhaps if more forearm shivers were allowed.....

In the other sport that's capturing all of ESPN's attention, the Celtics now have the upper hand in the NBA playoffs. I watched a bit of the game Sunday night. The Lakers look like they just don't care... aside from Kobe Bryant, who seems to be the one Laker that wants to win the championship. So, it's back to LA for the final two (maybe) games. Can the Lakers pull it off? I'm not sure. And really, does Phil Jackson need another championship ring? Isn't the 10 he's got enough already?

'Til next time....
