Really? Huge?Posted Monday, April 26, 2010, at 3:56 PM
Saw a commercial the other day that ticked me off (there's a surprise). HTC has released a new smartphone. Throughout the commercial the word Huge was tossed around like a leaf on a windy day. The whole point of the commercial was being able to watch HD movies on a, and I quote, 'Huge screen'. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but even I know that a 3" screen can hardly be construed as huge.
Which led me to wonder who in their right mind would pay good money to purchase an HD movie to watch it on their 3" smartphone screen? Maybe I'm missing something, but watching 'Avatar' on a 3" screen doesn't seem better than watching it on my 46" HDTV. And really, do we need smart phones? Why is our society so caught up in this never ending need to know everything at a minutes notice? Do I really need to watch a movie so bad that I'll pay to watch it on something the size of a business card? Not on my planet. I went to a bachelor party awhile back. In the good old days, we all got together, drank some alcohol, watched a dirty movie or two, and reminded the groom about all the fun he was about to give up. You know what happened most of the night during this bachelor party? We bar hopped alright, but what was everyone doing the whole time we were at the bars? Texting. Seriously, everyone except for me spent a good portion of the night texting on their smart phones. Hard to carry on a conversation with someone when their so intent on texting someone else that they forget you're there. I suppose you can tell by now that I'm not a huge fan of cell/smart phones. I like the fact that I can leave home and no one can get ahold of me whenever they want. I like the idea that I don't have access to the web 24 - 7. I spent too much time on the web on regular computers, don't need to do it when I'm away from one. I like the fact that I can play a round of golf without my cell phone vibrating or making some other ridiculous sound because someone just HAS to talk to me about what I'm having for supper that night. Maybe it's my age showing, but I rather miss the slower, less connected world of a decade ago. I don't mind being able to access anything I might need at home, I just don't think it's necessary 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And we won't even go into all the idiots that text and surf while they drive.... that's for another time and rant. Drop me a note and let me know just how out of the loop I am, or if you agree with me. 'Til next time.... |
