Reality TV... WTF??
Posted Tuesday, August 31, at 9:29 AM
I'm an admitted couch potato. I love watching TV. There are shows that I just HAVE to watch when they're on. And then there are shows that I just don't understand how they made it on TV in the first place, and how they manage to stay on.

Let's start with Jersey Shore. From what I gather, it's a show that follows a bunch of under 21s through their trials and tribulations. This show has somehow managed to make "stars" out of these youngsters. I've had the "pleasure" of seeing them on a few late night talk shows. Funny thing, the show is called Jersey Shore, and none of them are from Jersey. And why exactly does anyone care what these people are doing? While we're talking about New Jersey, there's also a show called Real Housewives of New Jersey, with Real Housewives of other places that I can't remember also on the airwaves.

There's Hoarders, a show about people with an affliction that makes them keep everything they ever buy or find, creating a mess of their house and lives. While I have watched this show a few times, after a few episodes, it's all pretty much the same thing week after week.

Intervention is an interesting show. Basically, it's drug and/or alcohol abusers being confronted by their families and friends who are trying to get them sobered up.

There's a show following the Kardashians. I still don't know how this family is famous and got their own TV show. The three sisters don't seem to have anything other than looks and the willingness to do just about anything to get press.

There's one central theme that I believe has made these shows and shows like them so popular to the American public. Chaos. Viewers seem to love to watch the chaos of other peoples lives. And do you seriously think that none of this stuff is scripted? I'm pretty sure that Hoarders and Intervention aren't, but Real Housewives, The Kardashians, Jersey Shore, and other shows like them are most certainly scripted at points. And if they aren't, God help us at the stupidity of the human being.

Now don't get me wrong. I find a few of them to be quite funny. Family Jewels, starring Gene Simmons of KISS and his whacky family, is one of my favorites. While I'm sure some of that is scripted too, I find myself drawn to the show, mainly because it makes me laugh my butt off every time I watch it.

I think the main problem is the glut of channels now available for people to watch. When I was a kid, we got maybe six channels we could choose from. Now, there's two hundred or more. With so many channels, they have to put something on the air for people to watch. And the key to all these reality shows? They're cheap to make. And for some reason, people just can't seem to get enough of them. And they just keep making more.

I think the studio heads that decide to run these shows are living by the one saying that seems to have over run the TV industry: KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.

'Til next time...

Football, racing and other tidbits
Posted Monday, August 23, at 4:31 PM

I'm so happy. Football is starting to crank up. I've already sat and watched 4 preseason games that don't mean a darn thing, and enjoyed each and every one of them. I can't wait for the regular season to start. Brett is back with the Vikings, but I have this dreadful feeling in my gut that they aren't going to be as good as last year. ...

No electricity = OMG moment
Posted Monday, August 9, at 3:26 PM

We had a brutal storm roll through Sunday night. Winds in excess of 70 mph. Thunder lightning, rain.... all the fun stuff storms are made of. The worst part was the wind. At one point my front screen door, which was closed and had a eye-hook lock fastened, was beating against the door jamb so hard I thought it would destroy the door. ...

Politics and politicians
Posted Monday, August 2, at 3:43 PM

Okay, I understand we need our Government. I also understand the idea behind how our government is set up. I also understand that our government is not working the way it was intended all those many years ago. See, back in the early days of our government, the politicians worried more about 'how do we help the country' and now it's more about 'how can I help myself'...

A mish-mash of things
Posted Monday, July 26, at 2:11 PM

Gotta feel for Juan Pablo Montoya. Two years in a row he had the car to beat at the Brickyard 400, and he has little to show for it. Last year, a pit road speeding penalty cost him the win. This year, a bad call on pit road by his crew chief cost him. Someday, Juan will get his first win on an oval track in NASCAR, he's just too good a driver not to...

Ten things that really bug me
Posted Tuesday, July 20, at 1:54 PM

My last blog was about tiny, yappy dogs that owners fail to keep in check. So this blog, I thought I'd go through a few other things that chap my hide. Number 10: Cell phones. I've never hidden the fact that I hate cellphones. Not that I don't think they can be useful. ...

Tiny, yappy, annoying dogs
Posted Tuesday, July 13, at 8:09 AM

I'm an animal lover. I love cats. I love dogs. I even have a soft spot for squirrels. I had a girlfriend once that had a ferret, which I also came to love. But there's one thing I hate, and it's tiny dogs. Tiny, yappy, noisy, freaked out about everything, bark at the wind dogs...

It's tough sometimes....
Posted Thursday, July 8, at 11:26 AM

It's tough sometimes to come up with something to say that may be interesting to other people. I find myself wanting to say things, but then I rethink it and decide that no one would probably care about that. Which is why I'm behind a bit on my usual schedule of updating my blog here...

When the mind overrules the body.....
Posted Monday, June 21, at 3:04 PM

Or in this case, when I wish the body would overrule my mind. Went to a friends to play some volleyball, catch up with members of her family I see twice a year, and eat some really good food. Now, I love playing volleyball. The way we all play out at the farm isn't too competitive, it's more for laughs and some exercise. ...

World Cup Soccer and the NBA
Posted Monday, June 14, at 3:59 PM

I tried to watch the World Cup Soccer game between the US and England, I really did. Two things made me change the channel after 10 minutes. The first, and most important, was the constant noise created by the fans with those obnoxiously annoying horns. ...

I don't feel any older....
Posted Monday, June 7, at 3:50 PM

Well, another birthday has come and gone, the 46th one to be exact, and like a lot of the others before it, I just don't feel any different. I had occasion to tell a friend the other day that according to my timeline when I was 15 years old, I have now officially crested the summit and am on the hopefully long downhill slide. I figure that 90 years of age is good to shoot for, considering at one point I never even thought I'd make it to 40, and now look at me...

Downhill slide? Maybe so....
Posted Tuesday, June 1, at 11:20 AM

So, I turn 46 years old on Saturday. I can still remember when I thought 46 was ancient. Now, I'm thinking 115 isn't even ancient. Funny how, as you get older, ages you thought were old, don't seem quite as bad as one thought. Yes, I take longer to do things than I used to...

It's been awhile...
Posted Monday, May 17, at 4:15 PM

So much to complain about so little space. Actually, a lot of what I'd like to complain about would either get myself or my employers in trouble, so I have to temper my thoughts and just let things slide by. While I don't agree 100% with Arizona's new immigration law, someone has to do something sometime. ...

Thoughts on HD and Cable TV
Posted Wednesday, May 5, at 1:02 PM

I believe that all television stations are broadcasting their signals in digital format now. At least that was the understanding I had from the new law that went into effect last year. So, here's my question... if all television stations are broadcasting a digital signal, why is my cable provider still sending me an analog signal? Shouldn't I be receiving a digital signal on basic cable without having to pay extra for it? Do they receive the digital signal from the stations and then downgrade them? I know I can pay more to receive digital and HD channels, but even when I do pay more for the "Upper" tier that's supposedly a digital signal, I only get 20-25 channels in digital, and even those aren't that much better than an analog signal. ...

Really? Huge?
Posted Monday, April 26, at 3:56 PM

Saw a commercial the other day that ticked me off (there's a surprise). HTC has released a new smartphone. Throughout the commercial the word Huge was tossed around like a leaf on a windy day. The whole point of the commercial was being able to watch HD movies on a, and I quote, 'Huge screen'. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but even I know that a 3" screen can hardly be construed as huge...

Some rambling thoughts....
Posted Tuesday, April 13, at 10:20 AM

I just realized a few days ago that I'm turning 46 this year. When I was in my teens, I would have considered that ancient. Now it just feels like it is. It shocked me a bit to realize that I'm just short of 50 years old with 2 adult children and one that's so close she may as well be. Might be time to make a bucket list...

A trip to the stars....
Posted Tuesday, April 6, at 2:24 PM

I had a friend ask me the other day why I like Sci-Fi so much. After a bit of thinking, I shared a story with them. A few years ago, I had a friend that grew up in a big city, but was now living in Storm Lake. We were heading home from a trip out of town one night, must have been close to midnight. ...

Spring fever has hit
Posted Wednesday, March 31, at 2:19 PM

Today, it's mid 70's, with a breeze, and pretty blue skies. The snow has melted from the ground, and soon, hopefully from our remembrances as well. Thoughts of breaking out the golf clubs and hitting the links start swirling through my mind. The chirping of birds in the morning is a sweet second alarm clock to wake to. ...

Big weekend for Iowa sports
Posted Monday, March 22, at 1:06 PM

What a weekend for Iowa sports teams! The Hawkeye wrestling team won their 23rd wrestling title, a feat that will probably not be bested. University of Northern Iowa took down the Kansas Jayhawks (#1 Seed, #1 in the polls) to move into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament...

I can see my driveway!!
Posted Tuesday, March 16, at 1:35 PM

It's hard to believe, but I actually do have a driveway that's made of cement, not snow. It's been close to 4 months since I've seen my driveway... and just about as long since I've been able to drive on it without being pitched from side to side by frozen tire tracks. ...
