SL schools plug in a tech plan, tune up music instrument buy (05/20/13)
The Storm Lake School Board Wednesday approved a technology plan for 70 additional computers and purchases for new music instruments and equipment. Both areas will greatly benefit the students in the district, the leaders suggested. Seventy desktop computers and towers will be purchased from Rick's Computers at a cost of $44,625, coming in below the budgeted $52,000. These new computers will replace labs at the elementary and high schools...
New band adds to Spectacular fun (05/20/13)
Bluegrass fans will be making note of Duluth's Saint Anyway band at the Storm Lake Fourth of July celebration. Star Spangled Spectacular organizers have booked the band for the afternoon entertainment lineup at Sunset Park Bandshell. Saint Anyway is a "stomp-grass" trio featuring Tony Petersen, Jami Kallestad and Dane Levinski, that plays at numerous venues in the upper Midwest. The group has three albums and six tours under their belt and has a new release planned for later in 2013...
Auditorium design to be revealed May 23 (05/20/13)
Updated design drawings of the auditorium and high school renovation project will be presented by architects DLR Group during a special public meeting Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the Storm Lake Schools Administration building. Since April 17, there have been many meetings between the DLR representatives and the high school staff and subcommittees to allow the architects to grasp the needs of the students, staff and auditorium committee for the complete project...
Pirate's Pointe mini-golf opening July 4 (05/20/13)
Construction has begun for Reel Time Rentals' 18-hole mini golf course, dubbed Pirate's Pointe. While weather initially delayed work earlier this spring, Reel Time representatives told the Pilot-Tribune they are still planning for a 4th of July opening for the 19,000 square foot course, located north of the Sunrise Pointe Golf Course clubhouse...

The recent "One Day Without Shoes" event on the Buena Vista University campus generated over $790 from t-shirt sales and other donations which is being presented to two non-profit organizations.

This was be the second year that BVU students have hosted the event as part of the national effort sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a company that matches every pair of its shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes that it gives to a child in need...

Southwest Shoreline Sanitary District trustees are considering declaring contractor default for their $3.6 million sewer system servicing homes on the south and west sides of the lake. "We've had numerous problems in the system, and there's been some delay in correcting them," district lawyer Dave Jennett told the Pilot-Tribune. Iowa's services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault need to modernize to reach more victims. The shelter closures are just one small part of a broader plan to improve services by redirecting resources.
